Feb 15, Falkland Islands

Arrived at Stanley in the Falkland Islands at 8am still quite cold but good visibility. Got a tender into the town which was quite interesting about a 20 minute ride the waves were quite high a few went over the top of the tender, lucky for me I didn’t sit where they wanted me to as the top hatch was slightly opened and the guy who sat there got quite a bit of wager down his back when the waves went over, it was the roughest tender ride we have ever had but still ok just a bit of fun. When we arrived at the dock there was a seal sunning himself at the end of the pier and hours later when it was time to tender back he was still there.  Stanley is quite a pretty little town, we went for a walk along the harbor and had a look at the Christ Church Cathedral also a park with whale bones, then we went on a tour to see the Magellanic Penguins at Gypsy Cove, they were gorgeous while walking along the track we saw a baby in its nest waiting for its mum to come back.  In the harbor we counted at least 12 Korean fishing boats all very old and rusty.  Everyone was due to be back on board by 4pm but the fishing ships were sailing out to sea which meant that the tenders couldn’t bring the passengers back from the port as the boats had right of way. This delayed our sailing by 2 hours but all was good we were at happy hour.  These boats are squid boats they have massive lights on the sides of them and up to 120 boats come in to this bay to get their licenses each season. The season started on the 28th of February and only 22 boats are allowed to go to sea at a time.
