Feb 09, Deception Bay and Scenic Cruising

We are now in Antarctic waters and our first destination was Deception Island in the Bransfield Strait which is quite impressive we saw thousands of penguins on the beach and climbing up the cliffs was wonderful to see. The weather has changed quite dramatically it is 1 degree the captain advised, and so time for thermals.  The seas are still reasonably calm, and inside the ship it’s lovely and warm outside is a completely different matter but who cares its worth it to be here. The captain advised that we had made extremely good time sailing to Deception Island so we now had time to go and see a massive glacier that this season they haven’t had time to view, sailing toward it was impressive, photos can’t do it justice.  The glacier is called A57 and is still in the Bransfield Straight they estimate that it contains 71 million tonnes of ice, its 11 nautical miles long and 5 nautical miles wide so impressive. Glaciers are only named when they are over 2 nautical miles and they have the prefixes either A,B,C or D which designates what part of Antarctica they came from, the 57 means it’s the 57 glacier that is over that length and from that area. While sailing to it we saw some wales albatrosses and penguins on icebergs it’s been a great day. After happy hour and dinner, we made our way to the show room and listened to Ancora which is an English group of 4 classically trained singers who sang a mix of pop and light opera they had beautiful voices and we enjoyed the show.
