Feb 08, Cape Horn and Drake Passage

We had a sleep in today didn’t need to be in the Crows Nest until 7am for sailing around Cape Horn and Drake Passage. Was a little rougher today but not too bad they said the waves in winter can get to 30 metres or 100 feet, definitely not for me.  It was raining a little bit and cold but was fantastic to be here and experience this, when we went around the horn the captain sounded the ships horn and emphasised that not a lot of people have actually been here.  Didn’t realise that Cape Horn was actually a small island and that there is a light house there that is inhabited by a family from the army, presently a husband and wife with 3 young children they get supplies once every 3 months.  After sailing the horn, we dropped off the pilot and started heading for Antarctica, the seas started getting a little choppier and visibility not as good as it has been. Went to 2 interesting talks today the first on the Antarctic Treaty how it was formed and how it works, they emphasised that it was Australia and France that originally stopped any country from mining in the Antarctic, was very interesting. The second talk was isolated at the South Pole which was more on how the Antarctic was formed and about the different plates which are shaping the changes of the continent. Was very interesting but not what I thought it would be about I thought it would be about when the weather changes and scientists get trapped down there. Been another great day decided against going to the show tonight and watched Bohemian Rhapsody instead had wanted to see it at home and just didn’t get there so glad we did.
